Bill, the son of Ernest and Vera Serrault, was born in Salina, Kansas on October 8, 1933. He grew up “a small town boy” and graduated from Salina High School in May of 1951. After high school Bill attended Kansas Wesleyan University. It was at that time he met the love of his life, Doris Shirack. They were wed on August 16, 1952, beginning a marriage that would span more than seven decades. Together they built a family grounded in love and devotion.
Bill was preceded in death by the passing of his wife, Doris in 2024. He is survived by his three children; daughters Robin Serrault Waddell and her husband Allen, Ronda Serrault Webb and her husband Culpepper, and son Greg Serrault. He was a proud grandfather to Taylor Webb (April), Jennifer Shaw (Andy), Lauren Klipfel (Ben), Amanda Guiffria (Christopher), Geoff Waddell (Kristi), and Michael Webb (Anabel); and his 10 great-grandchildren.
From 1952 to 1956, Bill proudly served in the United States Navy. During his military service he was stationed in Japan as a member of a PBM flight crew. Following his time in the Navy, Bill joined Southwestern Bell Telephone Company as a Yellow Pages advertising salesman. Through dedication, leadership, and a strong work ethic he steadily advanced through the company and retired after 35 years in 1991; as General Marketing Manager for West Texas, based in Fort Worth.
Bill and Doris remained deeply involved in civic life in Fort Worth where he contributed significantly to the community so loved by both of them. He served as chairman of the boards of the Fort Worth Chamber of Commerce, Tarrant County United Way, the TCU Research Foundation, the Fort Worth Arts Council, and Harris Health System. His commitment to public service led him to accept the role of Senior Vice President of the Harris Health Plan, where he served until his retirement in 2001.
For many years Bill provided leadership to the Colonial Country Club Golf Tournament Sales Committee and was instrumental in bringing the AT & T sponsorship to the 2018 Fort Worth Invitational. Colonial was considered by many to be his “home away from home.” He immensely enjoyed his rounds of golf at Colonial; especially when making his hole in one and posting his lowest score of 73. He treasured his many travels with Doris, the opportunity to play St. Andrew’s, and to attend the Masters on several occasions—experiences he counted among life’s greatest highlights. His favorite rounds of golf were those played with his son, Greg. Bill also loved his winning games of gin rummy “with the guys”, and a glass of Old Charter bourbon shared with family and friends through the years.
More than anything, he valued the relationships in his life. He will be remembered for his kindness, honesty, loyalty to friends, and unwavering devotion to his family. His legacy of leadership, service, and friendship will live on in the many lives he touched.
A family service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to the Center for Dementia Research or the American Diabetes Association in Bill’s memory
