Lt. Col. Eugene Bernard Byrnes Jr. USAF ret., 86, of Superior, WI, passed away in Fort Worth Texas on May 22, 2024, from brain trauma after an accident at home.  Surrounded by his loving family, Eugene departed, leaving behind a legacy of courage, service, and devotion.

Born on July 22, 1937, to Eugene Byrnes Sr. and Constance Olson Byrnes, Eugene, affectionately known as Gene, was a beacon of strength and integrity. He is survived by his beloved wife of 63 years, Claudette Mercy Byrnes, his sister Cathy Bergeron, his brother Paul Byrnes, his sons Greg and Todd Byrnes, daughter-in-law Linda Byrnes, and his cherished grandchildren, Alexandra and Austin Byrnes.

A proud graduate of Wisconsin State College, Superior, Gene received a Bachelor of Science from the Liberal Arts college in 1959.  Gene’s commitment to his country was evident early on as he joined the ROTC while at Wisconsin State.  His dedication led to a distinguished 23 year career in the United States Air Force, where he was commissioned as an officer upon graduation. Gene’s first assignment as a navigator in the B-52 at KI Sawyer was just the beginning of his remarkable journey.

Gene’s bravery shone brightly as he transitioned to the F-4 Phantom II, serving a tour in Vietnam where he was honored with the Distinguished Flying Cross.  During his Air Force career he also received many other awards and accommodations.  His passion for flight was matched only by his leadership skills, which he demonstrated in various roles managing systems analysts.

In 1969, Gene furthered his education by earning an MBA from the University of Southern California. His thirst for knowledge and excellence never waned.

Upon his retirement in 1981, Gene, alongside his wife Claudette, embarked on a new adventure, opening a Victorian collectible store in Nevada City, CA. For over 20 years, they shared their love for antiques with the community.

A devout Catholic and a member of the Knights of Columbus, Gene’s faith guided him throughout his life. He found joy in spending quality time with his family and was an avid golfer, embracing every moment on the green.  Gene also loved to read and work in garden.

Gene’s memory will be cherished and kept alive through the stories shared, the lives he touched, and the love he spread. His was a life well-lived, and his spirit will continue to inspire all who knew him.

Gene will be buried at the DFW National Cemetery with full military honors.
