JEAN BARRETT SCOTT

Jul 16, 1934 — Oct 6, 2026

Fort Worth

Jean Scott, 92, passed peacefully in her sleep, on October 6, 2026. At the time of her death, she was a beloved mother, sister, grandmother, and great grandmother.

Wilma Jean Barrett Scott was born on July 16,1934, to Walter Lawrence Barrett and Esta May Francis Barrett in a house between Mineral Wells and Graford. Graford and Possum Kingdom Lake always had a place in her heart as she told many fun stories about spending time there with grandparents and cousins. She grew up mainly in Fort Worth and remained lifelong friends with people she met at Alice Carlson Elementary, McLean Middle School, and R.L. Paschal High School. After graduation from Paschal, she married her high school sweetheart William Morgan Scott with whom she created a loving home for their four children and shared such a blessed life for over 62 years.

Jean gave her life to Christ at a Billy Graham Crusade in Arlington, Texas when she was 16, and her faith was always the guiding factor in her life. For over two decades she worked for First United Methodist Church Fort Worth, a place her family had worshipped at since the 1890s and a place she loved because of the people and their shared mission of service to the Lord.

At FUMC, Jean was a tireless member of the United Methodist Women and the incredible mission of that group. She volunteered at the FUMC Mission for many years before coming on staff to start a program for senior adults, the Lamplighters. She ran that program for the church for over 15 years, retiring to spend time at home and traveling (usually in New Mexico and Colorado) with her dear husband.

Jean loved God, her family, reading, art projects, sewing, gardening, and genealogy. Her faith was her and Bill's lasting legacy.

Jean was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years; her parents, brother, Robert, sister, Maureen Boggs, her son-in-law, Andy Kitchens and grandsons, Barrett Payne, Joshua Hedges, and Winston Payne.

She is survived by her children Ann Payne and her husband, Wally, Susan Kitchens, Bill Scott and his wife, Sarah, and John Scott and his wife, Talley. In addition, she leaves behind grandchildren, Michael Hedges and his husband, Ryan Kite-Hedges, Andrew Scott and his wife, Courtney, Alexander Scott and his wife, Patty, Jane Morgan Scott Hobart and her husband, Jake, and Will Scott; and great grandchildren, John Ellis and Tilley Scott, Henry and Scottie Hobart, and Tennessee Kite-Hedges. She also leaves her dear sister and brother in law, Carole and Gene Chambers, and nieces, Christine Chambers Smth and Barbara Boggs Klieforth, and nephews, Bradley and Byron Chambers and Jim Boggs.

Services celebrating Jean’s life will be held Monday, November 2, at 10 am in the sanctuary at First United Methodist Church, with a reception to follow in the church's Wesley Hall.
