SYLVIA METZ STEVENS

June 2, 1937 — February 24, 2026

Fort Worth

Sylvia Stevens died of chronic vascular dementia on February 24, 2026, at The Stayton on Museum Way.

She was born in Kenedy, Texas to Texans of German descent.  Her father was Milam Sutton Metz, a Shell Oil executive, and her mother was Clara Louise Mueller Metz, a teacher.  Sylvia graduated from Midland High School, where she participated in Texas Interscholastic League Speech competitions, acted in and directed theater productions and was a disc jockey on local radio and TV.

She attended Lindenwood College in St. Charles, Missouri and was a Magna cum Lauda graduate of the University of Texas at Austin (BA 1959).  She taught in public schools in University City, Missouri and Nashville, Tennessee.  In Austin, she was on the staff of Laguna Gloria Art Museum, served as Curator of Museum Education (1978-1992) and filled several roles in art education in Fort Worth, including faculty of adult education at TCU teaching art appreciation.

The Stevens have been devoted supporting members of St. Christopher's Episcopal Church since 1999.  They have taken great delight in supporting agencies that have enhanced the quality of life in our community.  These include The Center for Transforming Lives, Cancer Care Services of Tarrant County, The Episcopal Diocese of Texas, the Hopewallah Leprosy Program and others.  They support TCU's Brite Divinity School and collaborative projects between Brite and the Fort Worth community.

Sylvia is survived by her husband of 66 years, Dr. Timothy Stevens, a retired physician, and two sons, Matt, a civil engineer in Dallas, and Hal, a retired addiction nurse in Austin.  Matt and his wife, Kristin, have a daughter, Bridget, and Hal and his wife, Samantha, have three sons, Luke, Sutton and Jeremy, and a daughter, Mae.

We are especially grateful for Sylvia's caregivers.  They have given Sylvia extraordinary, respectful loving and consistent care.  They include Ana, Ashley, Briana, Funto and Quonta, who have ALL been wonderful.  And our thanks go to Overture Home Care, which has provided these Angels!

A Memorial Service for Sylvia will be held at 1:00 pm Saturday, April 25, at 5709 Wedgewood Drive, Fort Worth 76133.  The service will be followed by a reception.
